Saturday Morning HIIT Cardio and Ab Workout
I usually wake up fairly early on Saturdays (not as early as I do during the week; more like 6AM instead of 4:30AM!). And I like to start the day out with a little cardio since I don’t lift weights on the weekends. Lately I’ve been hitting a lot of HIIT (high intense interval training) cardio on the elliptical. I also decided to hit a few ab exercises this morning after cardio.
All together the workout took about 25 minutes. The HIIT cardio workout on the elliptical took about a total of 20 minutes (this includes the two minute warm up) and the ab workout took about seven minutes (rest periods was very short between sets). So here’s the workouts.
Saturday Morning HIIT Cardio Workout
Total Time: 20 Minutes
2 Minute Warm
1 Minute High Intensity
1 Minute Low Intensity
Repeat (until 20 total minutes are up)
Saturday Morning Ab Workout
Exercise Ball Crunches: 4 sets x 15-25 reps
Bicycle Crunches: 3 sets x 40 reps (20 on each side)
Planks: 3 sets x 40 seconds
Seated Leg Raises: 3 sets x 20 reps
The cardio workout was pretty tough as I gradually increased my intensity level on each high intensity minute. I like the elliptical machine for HIIT training because it’s low impact and you’re moving your entire body (I’ll also do this on the stationary bike at times, but I prefer the elliptical). I basically did a two minute warm up then alternated high intensity and low intensity each minute. If you’re having trouble losing body fat or you’re at a sticking point, start doing high intensity interval training cardio workouts. This type of workout will make you sweat so bring a towel!
The abdominal workout was fairly typical but the key to this ab workout was I only rested about 15 seconds between sets. That being said, the workout was very quick. To me, if you rest too long between your sets of ab exercises you lose the effect of the workout. That’s just my opinion and from my own experience. I prefer to rest less between ab exercise sets. I also like to do a variety of abdominal exercises to hit different angles and to keep from getting bored.
That’s it for today’s Saturday Morning HIIT Cardio and Ab Workout. I won’t tell you all the food I’ve eaten today since then!
