Jason’s 700 Rep Extreme Leg Workout
It’s Wednesday which means brutal leg day for me. I was reading one of my old Muscular Development magazines and saw a leg workout that Branch Warren and Johnnie Jackson did (I believe the owner of Metroflex, Brian, put them through this leg workout after an injury Branch had). Me and Big Mike made several modifications to the workout but we followed the concept.
Basically it’s an extremely high rep leg workout, hence 700 total reps (and that’s not counting the calves we did at the end)! The idea is to pump as much blood into the muscle as possible. I’ve been doing high reps for legs over the past few years and have experienced more muscle growth in my quads and hams than ever. However, this leg workout is a little over the edge!
700 Rep Leg Workout
Leg Extensions: 4 sets x 50 reps
Leg Press: 4 sets x 50 reps
Squat Machine: 4 sets x 15 reps
Lying Leg Curls: 4 sets x 30 reps
Seated Leg Curls: 4 sets x 30 reps
So we did a total of 460 reps for quads and 240 reps for hamstrings. The workout is very quick too, especially if you’re training with one partner. I believe it took us about an hour and five minutes to finish the leg workout (excluding calves at the end). The rest while the other is doing their high rep set is adequate so you keep moving. We hit some calves after that, which was two exercises for four sets of 30 reps.
I got a different kind of pump with this extreme high rep leg workout. It’s almost like you’re pre-exhausting the muscle for the first part of the set and within the same set you move into what you might consider working reps. The first half of the set feels easy but then it starts getting very brutal and painful towards the end. You feel like you can’t go on but you push through anyway. I felt muscle fibers that I haven’t felt before doing these extreme high reps. This leg workout may be something we start incorporating every three to four weeks. Try it. Do it!
