Build and Burn with Supersets

I’ve been on this superset craze lately. In my younger years I stayed away from this in fear I would lose size and strength. It was all straight sets back then. While I still want to maintain muscle size, I also want to get more out of my workouts overall and burn a little in the process.

I also believe I had a misconception early-on of how your body reacts to supersets. I’m actually finding myself getting stronger. I’m also enjoying the visual effects to my physique.

More Volume = More Muscle

I noticed that my body does well with more training volume. This goes back to the Arnold era. It was common for bodybuilders to spend several hours in the gym back then. but let’s be realistic; most of us don’t have that kind of time. Supersets allow you to double the volume in almost the same amount of time.

Many will use lighter weights with supersets but I dont think it’s an excuse to go light. You can still go heavy, especially on the first exercise. In this respect, supersets can help you get stronger.

Superset Chest Workout

I’m going to post this morning’s chest workout as an example. This is one of the best pec pumps I’ve gotten. I plan to continue with these types of workouts for a while, especially for chest.

Incline Bench Press: 4 x 10-12

Bench Press: 4 x 8-10

Decline Bench Press: 4 x 8-10
superset with –
Cable Crossovers: 4 x 10

Hammer Strength Chest Press: 4 x 10-12
superset with –
Dips: 4 x 10-12

I’ve been using supersets for most every workout. I start out my back training yesterday by supersetting lat pulldowns with reverse grip pulldowns. This set the tone for high intensity for the rest of the workout.
