5×5 with Deadlifts

Happy Friday everyone! I want to share this morning’s workout which consisted of deadlifts as part of my 5 x 5 workout.

It’s been about a year or so since I’ve attempted deads. Those who have been following me for a while know that I have some lower back issues. This has kept me from deadlifts and free weight squats.¬†However, I’m slowly getting back into deadlifts.

5 x 5 Workout with Deadlifts

Squats (plate-loaded):
5 x 5

Bench Press:
5 x 5

5 x 5

Lat Pulldowns:
4 x 8, 1 x 20

I’ve been doing rows instead of deadlifts but I believe I’ll stick with deads. I don’t feel any pain in my lower back at all this morning. In fact, I feel pretty good right now.

I also chose to do deadlifts as my last core 5 x 5 exercise. I wanted to be thoroughly warmed up and also wanted to be somewhat fatigued by then so I would not be tempted to go heavier than I needed to. I need to ease back into these.

I also extended my 5 x 5 workout beyond the core lifts and added one more back exercise, lat pulldowns. I extended in the same manner for chest on Monday and legs on Wednesday.

I wrote an article a few years ago that talks about doing deadlifts with lower back problems. If you’re on of those people (like myself and many others), it’s worth checking out:
