Ah, pre workout supplements. I’ll admit that I’m addicting to them. It’s a no-brainer for me. Good workout with no pre workout vs. most excellent workout with pre workout.
I’m going to give you my review of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard PreWorkout. I love the simplicity of ON. There’s no fancy, hyped up name for this product.
At the time of writing this review, I’ve been taking Optimum Nutrition Pre Workout for about 3 weeks. So how does it work for me? I’ll break it down.
ON Gold Standard Pre Workout Review
First, I’ll cover my dose. I took just one serving the first day. It was just ok. After that I started taking 2 servings (2 scoops) and I’ve actually bumped it up to 2 rounded scoops on leg day and back day, or if I’m feeling extra tired for whatever reason.
I’ll go more into depth on my Optimum Nutrition Pre Workout review by splitting up the categories and giving you my rating for each.
Energy = 7.5/10
I’ll give the energy category a good rating. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre Workout isn’t one of those extreme ultra concentrated (and 10 other words you see on labels) pre workouts that gives me that immediate surge. It’s more of a smooth energy. But it’s sustains me throughout my workouts. And there’s no crash.
Strength/Power = 8/10
I have gotten a little stronger on this stuff! With doubling the dose, I’m getting 6 grams of creatine. So that alone probably has a lot to do with it. And I prefer creatine before workouts.
Pumps = 7/10
I found the pump to be decent in my Optimum Nutrition Pre Workout review. It’s not over the top, but I do see my veins popping out more than many other pre workouts I’ve taken. And I’m not a veiny guy to begin with.
Mental Focus = 9/10
This is where it shines. I do notice the mental focus and I’m sharper during my workouts with ON Pre Workout. I’ve been able to power though more sets and reps and concentrate more on the muscle I’m working. I tend of space out in general, so this is good for me.

Here’s my thoughts on each matrix:
Muscle Matrix – I covered this earlier but I can’t stress enough how beneficial creatine is for pre workout. I attribute my strength gains to this. Simply put, creatine works. I like to see this in pre workout supplements.
Performance Composite – These 2 simple ingredients are powerful for helping you push through your workouts. Beta alanine and citrulline are two supplements you should find in every high quality pre workout. Combined, they help you pump out more sets and reps.
Energy and Focus Complex – This is awesome because it’s not just a bunch of caffeine. The carnitine HCL and tyrosine are great for mental focus and sustainable energy.
More Thoughts on ON Pre Workout
It’s probably not my absolute favorite pre workout supplement. But it’s pretty dang good. And I can see me taking it again.
With me doubling the dose (and then some), the 30 servings will last me about 2.5 weeks. If I could change anything, I would have them up the dose of the ingredients so that 2 servings is 1 (30 true servings would last you well over a month!). Then again, I’m a pre workout addict so 1 normal serving may suffice for most people.
