Do you remember when the steroid alternative prohormones first came out? The muscle building supplement market exploded with these legal testosterone boosters. The only other explosion like this was when creatine was introduced as a muscle builder in the early 90s. There was a good reason for such an uproar about prohormones because they simply worked, and most of them worked quite well granting similar muscle and strength gains as anabolic steroids. This is because most prohormone formulas mimicked the properties of anabolic steroids once broken down by the body. Unfortunately there were also a ton of steroid alternative prohormone knock-offs out there that did nothing.

Since prohormones have been banned in 2005 (and there was actually another ban in 2010 on a new generation of prohormones that converted into the anabolic substance called tren) there haven’t been too many supplements that pack on muscle such as these. However, there are many supplement companies that kept the name of some of their steroid alternative muscle builders yet altered the formulas a bit to be in compliance with the governing laws. I’m going to give you my own review of one of these products; Animal Test by Universal Nutrition.

For starters, Animal Test is actually considered a protestosterone rather than a prohormone. Without going into detail, while protestosterones and prohormones have a few differences, at the end of the day their purpose is to produce or assist in boosting natural testosterone. I was attracted by the fact that this product claims to be above and beyond your average legal natural testosterone booster by implementing a pro-androgen complex and hypertrophic response complex. But I also noticed that cissus quadrangularis is part of the formula (specifically listed under the 'pro-androgen complex' on the label). Cissus is a plant extract used mainly for healing ligaments and tendons but it’s also advertised to have deca-like effects. Now I’m not familiar with the older formulas of Animal Test when prohormones were legal. But looking at the current label, I figured I would give it a shot as it's older version was advertised as a solid steroid alternative.
I actually intend of trying Animal Test again but I'm going to go ahead and buy 2 canisters this time and do a full 6 week cycle. I'm already kicking myself about the cost because let's be honest, you can get a 10cc bottle of 'the real stuff' for the cost of one canister of Animal Test. However, I would like to try the full 6 weeks of Animal Test as this review is based on me trying this product back in 2008.

My final thoughts on Animal Test is that it’s a great product if you’re stuck in a rut on your gains. It will certainly help you break past your plateau. You might as well suck it up and buy 2 canisters of Animal Test for a full six week cycle. As with many pro testosterone and prohormone products as well as other legal testosterone boosters, these substances take time to get into your system and you need several weeks on this to get the full benefits. Animal Test is a great product if you can fit it into your supplement budget. And it’s best to buy something that you know will work. Universal Nutrition has been around since 1977 and has a hardcore following.

Jason's Animal Test Review - 3 Week Cycle

by Jason M. Stallworth,
May 10th, 2011

**this review is from when I took Animal Test several years ago (about 5 years from the above date) - I tried Animal Test again in 2011 for a full 6 week cycle and my latest review is here:
Jason's Updated Animal Test Review
Pros:  During the first week I thought I wasted my money but towards the end of the second week I noticed a bump in strength. By the third week I was stronger and my muscles were more full.

Cons: This product is quite expensive depending on where you buy it. I've seen it as low as around $54 and as high as over $80.

My Experience with Animal Test

I only took Animal Test for 3 weeks and took one pack a day as the label instructed.
