After a lot of research and experience with taking BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) around or during workout times I ran across Universal’s EAA Stack and decided to dig into essential amino acids. In short, EAAs are responsible for increasing muscle protein synthesis and decreasing muscle protein breakdown (this is pretty much what’s on the label and can be validated by multiple reliable sources). This is why EAAs are known as a phenomenal recovery supplement. EAAs also help maintain a positive nitrogen balance which is important for muscle growth. Another significant note is that EAAs contain the branched chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine (this is mainly what sparked my interest in EAAs after seeing the results I got from adding BCAAs into my supplement regimen). EAA Stack from Universal Nutrition contains 6,000 mg of essential amino acids per serving. So I figured I’d give it a shot.
Before I tried Universal EAA Stack I was taking Scivation Xtend post workout and sometimes during my workouts (Xtend is a great product, btw). During this time I was taking another product post workout so I started taking 1 serving of EAA Stack during my workouts. I also took a serving during my cardio sessions. I never took more than 1 serving because I always have a post workout shake as soon as I get home from the gym. The point of EAA Stack for me was to give me sustainable muscle energy and prevent protein breakdown during workouts (and during cardio).
Pros: It’s a simple-no frills ‘what you see is what you get’ supplement and it’s effective. EAA Stack is perfect if you’re building your own post workout stack as well as taking it on its own during or after your workouts. It’s a pure supplement with no fillers or extra crap.
Cons: There’s nothing negative here; EAA Stack is exactly what it claims to be.
Although I used this mainly during workouts you could use EAA Stack for immediate post workout on its own or by adding it to another supplement such as Universal Nutrition Storm (EAA Stack + Storm = an extremely effective post workout blend). I’m must say I’m a firm believer in taking EAAs or at least BCAAs during your cardio sessions as well to prevent muscle protein breakdown. That’s the one fear with cardio for most of us; losing muscle. The EAA Stack should help prevent that while still getting the fat burning benefits of cardio.
