Post Workout Protein & Carbs
Post workout nutrition is simple and the most basic meal of the day. You need a lot of protein and a lot of carbohydrates. And you want something that’s going to digest quickly so your muscles can immediately begin the recovery process.
Whey protein is the best choice for post workout. There are several types of whey proteins out there. I keep it simple and have been sticking with Dymatize Elite whey. I’m not necessarily promoting Dymatize (of course if they pay me, I will!); it’s just worked well for me for many years. Most of the times I’ve switched protein powders it gave me an upset stomach.
Fast-acting, or rather, simple carbs are also needed right after a hard workout. Your body’s glycogen is depleted so this is the one time you can take in some sugar and get away with it (obviously we want sugar from natural resources). Fruits: bananas and dark berries are my first choice for simple carbs post workout.
Jason’s Perfect Post Workout Shake
2 scoops of whey protein powder
1 serving os dark berries
1 teaspoon of raw honey
In the picture above I’m using a banana, blueberries, and strawberries. These were freshly picked. But often times I buy a bag of frozen dark berries from Publix or Costco and use those. I generally make my post workout shake the night before and keep it in the fridge so it’s ready as soon as I get home from the gym in the morning. My morning’s are a bit rushed; after the gym, I have to feed myself and all of our animals.
I don’t typically mix the raw honey with my shake. I just take a teaspoon by itself. There’s a ton of benefits to taking a teaspoon of raw, natural honey daily. We have several corner markets here and there are a lot of bee farmers that deliver honey to them. For me, this is the perfect post workout shake!
