I wanted to post my thoughts on taking amino acids (BCAAs are most common) during your workouts. A while back the term ‘intra workout’ became a buzz phrase among the supplement industry. At first, I thought maybe they had ran out of hype with the basics like pre workouts, protein, creatine, etc. But as I begin to experiment, my thoughts quickly shifted.
Before going further, it’s important to understand what aminos do, especially branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). In short, they increase protein synthesis. At first I thought ‘That’s great for post workout so why would I need this during my workouts?‘ Think of it this way. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and protein is what allows our muscles to recover and grow.
When we’re training, we’re tearing the muscle down and in that process, it’s possible for our body to use protein for the energy needed. So if we can increase protein synthesis during training, we can actually allow ourselves to train harder and longer. For me, this is great as I’ve become a fan of high volume workouts over the years.
Let’s be honest; amino acids aren’t going to blow you up overnight. It doesn’t work like that. However, you should notice increased recovery time as well as more sustainable muscle energy during your workouts. With these factors, you can indeed get bigger and stronger, faster.
In my opinion, post workout nutrition and supplementation are still king. This is the most crucial time to replenish your body and muscles. However, I’ve noticed a tremendous difference when taking my aminos during my workouts. In fact, since i train early mornings, I also take aminos before I workout (since I generally don’t eat anything prior).
